Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Mlilwane, Swaziland’s pioneer conservation area, is a beautiful, secluded sanctuary situated in Swaziland’s ‘Valley of Heaven’, the Ezulwini Valley, in between Mbabane and Manzini.

Mlilwane means ‘Little Fire’, being derived from the numerous fires started by lightning strikes on the Mlilwane Hill. And the name ‘Little Fire’ now also holds significance as the little fire that started Swaziland’s big conservation movement. Mlilwane is also a hub of activity for local birds and wildlife. You can download a full list of bird species within Mlilwane by clicking here.

An ideal-stopover on excellent roads from its regional neighbours, Mlilwane is situated in Swaziland’s main tourist hub. 24-hr gate access allows visitors to easily enjoy the park and its nearby tourist attractions, including a variety of craft shops in Ezulwini and Malkerns.

Pick from a wide range of accommodation including camping, caravanning, traditional Swazi beehive huts, self-catering cottages or rondavels at Mlilwane’s Rest Camp. Or enjoy a sundowner at the famous Hippo Haunt Restaurant or a dip in the swimming pool on those long summer days.

Swaziland’s WILDest Backpackers, Sondzela Backpackers is a great budget option within Mlilwane, and for those looking for a little bit of luxury; the luxurious Reilly’s Rock Hilltop Lodge, steeped in history and surrounded by the Royal Botanical Gardens and its resident rare antelopes, is a must!

Mlilwane is Swaziland’s most frequently visited reserve and home of Imvelo MTB Classic. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and the abundant wildlife that grace the plains by foot, vehicle, on horseback and on mountain bikes-- all led by Swazi guides who are experts in their field.
