Big Bend

Named after a sweeping curve in the Great Usuthu River, this town is surrounded by large cattle ranches and the vast plantations of the Ubombo sugar estate, of which is the main basis for the town's name.

The town itself is small with some shops and guest houses. The Bend Inn, situated at the top of the of the town offers sundowners on their patio with a view over the river.

As its name suggests, Big Bend lies on a big bend in the Usuthu River, where it meets the Lubombo Mountains. The town’s situation is picturesque, with views from surrounding hills across the river and a wild and beautiful gorge through the mountains. The big bend in the Usuthu made the site ideal for irrigation of a large area of low lying bush, which eventually made this a centre for sugar production in the region.
